The Princess Bride Game - Review

The Princess Bride Game
Ages: Everyone

I have read the book, seen the movie and ventured into the game - and by now "As you wish" is part of my family's lexicon. The game hews close to the movie - the characters - even the voices. World Wide Biggies and Elephant Entertainment do an exceptional job on the image and voice of Peter Falk who introduces each of the segments. Careful attention has been paid to all the voice acting and the music and songs fit nicely. There are five story/game sections, each with 17 levels.

As You Wish is the starting chapter and involves time management tasks performed by Wesley. Some of these simple farm type tasks took me several rounds before I could figure out how to solve them. The designers and I are not working from the same page.
    • Battle of Wits is comprised of trivia questions that are sometimes either too difficult or too easy.
    • Fire Swamp is a platformer and puzzler and brings Buttercup finally into play.
    • Miracle Max takes place in Max's basement, and involves making potions interspersed with helping Max find hidden objects. It is one of the funniest sections.
    • Storming the Castle requires you to go back to the cut scenes in the beginning and end of each segment to find objects to make a catapult. While you can play any sequence in any order, this one must be played last since you only get the ending sequence after you have played through a level. Hey it's long - 72 levels.

What to do is sometimes pretty obtuse - mostly in the "As You Wish " timed levels. Help is a reiteration of the original puzzle statement. Saves, Exits and "Returns to Map" are not obvious, requiring the player to actually be in the game to get out of it. Since there is no manual - it is questionable how much trial and error will take place before frustration sets in.

This is not just a girl's game. In fact, it is mostly about Wesley saving Buttercup and falls into the generic story class of hero saves relevant female. The disk is a hybrid and runs on both MACs and PCs.

Fun Factor: Should have been more fun.
Female Factor: Buttercup was never meant to be the main character.
Player Friendly: Needed more boiler plate functions
